About the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC)
The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) founded the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Beijing in 1958, marking the institution’s inception. It was established to develop the most talented scientists and technologists in the nation. USTC relocated to Hefei, the provincial capital of Anhui, in 1970. This esteemed research university has welcomed talent from all across the world ever since. The institution currently boasts 16,600 gifted students, aspiring scholars, and researchers in addition to 2,250 teaching staff.
A Historic City with Innovative High-Tech
Hefei, the capital and largest city of Anhui Province and one of the key national centers for scientific research and education, is home to five USTC campuses. The city has a sophisticated transportation infrastructure and is situated in the center of East China. A strong transportation network is available to you because the entire city is connected by highway, train, and airport.
Because of the rivers that encircle it, the lively city enjoys a pleasant climate and beautiful surroundings. Hefei is a vibrant, long-standing, and inventive city that is a member of the World Science and Technology City Alliance. Hefei is now home to over 1,000 research and development (R&D) institutes, as well as a number of important national laboratories and state-of-the-art scientific equipment, making it one of the central cities for the nation’s scientific advancement.
Outstanding Research and Educational Accomplishments
The first Chinese graduate school, the Graduate School of USTC, was established in Beijing in 1978. That same year, the university established the first “special class for the gifted young,” breaking new ground in China’s higher education system. The research-intensive program for highly gifted young people has produced hundreds of prominent scientists, researchers, and technology entrepreneurs over the course of more than 40 years. Only 1,880 freshmen are admitted each year, but there is one academician for every 1,000 graduates, and over 700 of them go on to earn master’s or doctoral degrees—ratios that are significantly higher than those of any other Chinese university.
USTC, a little-known university, has big goals. It offers students fascinating opportunities to learn more through its 23 schools in the natural and social sciences, including 6 research centers. It is the owner of the greatest number of large scientific centers and national labs. It is the only institution in China that runs two national laboratories: the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale (HFNL) and the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (NSRL), China’s first national laboratory.
One of the six national research centers authorized by the People’s Republic of China’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). Twelve national research institutes, four significant national scientific research infrastructures, and sixty-two significant provincial research institutes are all part of USTC. In the areas of voice processing, brain-inspired intelligence technology, particle detection and electronics, and fire science, it is the pinnacle of Chinese excellence.

In addition, the USTC has established long-term and strategic cooperation with international institutions including the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). In the meantime, the university has drawn esteemed research universities from all over the world, such as Princeton, Stanford, and Oxford, to form cooperative partnerships.
